Many learners struggle to engage with online courses due to a lack of control over their learning experience.
This course uses the theme of crafts to exemplify a larger learning solution that can be employed in a variety of subject areas.
This custom menu interaction allows students to take control of their learning. This personalized approach can increase engagement and motivation, leading to improved learning outcomes.
This project showcases a custom menu that empowers users to have control over their learning experience by allowing them to choose which information they want to access first. Since the information doesn't require a specific order, it offers greater flexibility. For each craft type I chose to provide a brief overview, real-world examples for practical application, and accompanying images.
The storyboard for this project was straightforward as the majority of the experience was created using multiple layers on a single slide. When it came to incorporating the test questions, having a storyboard in place is good practice as it helps to ensure a smooth development process.
I experimented with several designs where the buttons were arranged in a circular formation or had circular shapes themselves, but found that these designs tended to clutter the slide quickly. In the end, I opted for a column layout which provided a clean and organized appearance.
I aimed for a playful and vibrant aesthetic that would align with the topic, while also achieving a neat and polished look. The incorporation of a clean-cut yet colorful style successfully blends these two elements together.
This learning experience provided an opportunity for personalization. Users are prompted to enter their name at the beginning of the interaction, which is then utilized again on the post-assessment screen, adding a personalized touch to the overall experience.
The post-assessment screen provides users with their test scores, and to enhance the experience, I incorporated pass/fail images that were thematically related. This way, if a user did not pass on their first attempt, they were rewarded with a "fixed" painting at the end, adding an element of motivation and encouragement.
This project features a test that unlocks once the learner has viewed all the material. The test provides immediate feedback as well as a score at the end where the user has the opportunity to go back to the material to review before taking the test again.
This course is structured in two scenes. The first scene includes the title screen, name entry, and menu. When users click on the craft menu buttons, they are directed to different layers on the same slide. Clicking on the test button then transitions them to the second scene, which features the question bank, results slide, and credits.
This project features both multiple choice and checkbox questions in the test.
Developing this project gave me a lot of experience with the programming element of Storyline. I practiced with variables by incorporating the name input. I created triggers using variables and conditions to ensure that the test remained locked until all the other items were viewed. This custom menu project allowed me to further build upon my existing knowledge of Storyline while also gaining proficiency in new skills within the program.
